Gas ban marks beginning of solar-electric era in Australia

The Victorian government is banning natural gas connections in all new homes since January 1, 2024. This decision is part of the Australian state’s initiative to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045. With this change, the state is steering away from fossil fuels, helping reduce carbon emissions and aligning with global climate change goals.

As a result, new homes in Victoria will no longer have gas heating, hot water systems, or gas-powered cooking appliances. Instead, they will rely on electricity for all energy needs.

This transition is a significant shift for Victoria, where over 40,000 of the 50,000 new homes built, each year are connected to the gas network.

New all-electric homes: What to expect

For future homeowners in Victoria, the new regulations mean embracing electric power entirely. Electric appliances for heating, cooking, and hot water will replace traditional gas-powered systems.

The Victorian government underlines that this shift offers various benefits for homeowners, including lower energy bills, especially when combined with renewable energy sources like solar panels. Switching to all-electric systems could save households up to $1,000 annually on energy bills, with even greater savings for those who integrate PV energy into their electricity usage.

Why my-PV is the solution for solar-electric homes

As Victoria moves towards an all-electric future, selecting the right energy solution is crucial. my-PV offers solutions tailored for this transition.

my-PV products enable you to convert solar power into heat, significantly increasing your self-consumption of solar-generated electricity. By covering both your hot water and space heating needs with solar-electric power, my-PV products allow you to maximize your use of renewable energy. This way, PV self-consumption is maximized and energy costs are reduced, while also complying with the new regulations.

Depending on the yield of the photovoltaic system, the self-use of photovoltaic electricity can be increased to up to 70 %.

Our photovoltaic power managers AC•THOR i (AC•THOR specifically designed for Australia) and AC•THOR 9s are the intelligent distribution centre of your self-produced electricity from the roof.

In well-insulated homes (with a heating requirement of less than 50 kWh per square meter annually), even space heating can be covered by photovoltaics. Additionally, our system allows you to use solar power exclusively for hot water, with no need for a grid connection, thanks to the direct connection between PV panels and the DC power manager SOL•THOR.

By choosing my-PV, Australian homeowners are not only meeting Victoria’s new regulations but also investing in a sustainable and cost-effective energy future.
