Belgium’s measures against PV power surplus – my-PV solutions are ready for the future

Across Europe, electricity grids are facing a major challenge: with increasingly decentralized energy production and growing power demand, grids must adapt to entirely new conditions.

A current example can be seen in Belgium, where the rapid and ongoing expansion of photovoltaic (PV) systems is placing new demands on the power grid. Especially during the summer months, PV systems generate more electricity than the grid can absorb.

To address this, the Belgian Federation of Electricity and Gas Companies (FEBEG) has introduced measures aimed at securing grid stability. The key points include:

  • Flexibility

A central element of the measures is flexible energy consumption. By using storage systems or controllable loads, electricity can be utilized precisely when it is abundantly available. Dynamic electricity tariffs further incentivize shifting consumption to times of high energy availability and lower prices.

  • Accelerated rollout of digital electricity meters

In Brussels and Wallonia, the rollout of digital meters is being prioritized. These meters allow real-time tracking of consumption and production data, forming the basis for flexible energy management.

  • Reduced feed-in tariffs

To relieve pressure on the grid and encourage self-consumption, feed-in tariffs for surplus PV electricity will be reduced. The Netherlands go even further – PV system owners are charged for feeding excess electricity into the grid.

my-PV offers practical solutions for implementation

With my-PV solutions, PV system owners in Belgium can meet these new requirements. Not only does this benefit the electricity grid, but it also offers clear advantages for PV system owners – a true win-win situation.

my-PV devices convert surplus PV energy into heat for hot water or space heating. Unlike conventional heating rods, my-PV devices adjust power output continuously and compensate the grid feed-in point in real time – ensuring that every available watt is used efficiently. This maximizes self-consumption while avoiding feed-in during grid-critical periods.

Compatible with digital electricity meters

For customers in the Benelux region, my-PV provides the right technology for integration with national digital electricity meters. The AC ELWA 2, AC•THOR, and AC•THOR 9s are compatible with the in the region widely used P1 digital meters or the Slimme Meters.

Via the P1 port, in combination with the RTU Gateway and the P1 Interface from my-PV, surplus energy is automatically detected – eliminating the need for a separate surplus detector. This results in significant cost savings.

Thanks to plug & play, installation is simple and straightforward. The only requirement is to activate the P1 port with the local grid operator.

Reference project in Belgium

One of our reference projects showcases a Belgian customer who uses surplus data from their smart meter to generate hot water using PV power.

The system consists of just three components in addition to the PV system and water heater: the AC•THOR, a temperature sensor, and the P1 Interface.

Detailed technical information can be found in the project description.

Make the most of dynamic electricity tariffs – with my-PV DTO

Dynamic electricity tariffs allow users to consume electricity when prices are especially low on the energy exchange – a key contribution to reducing grid stress.

This is where the my-PV DTO comes in: the new feature in the my-PV Cloud allows owners of IoT-enabled my-PV devices to use not only excess solar energy, but also inexpensive grid electricity for heat generation.

If you have a PV system and a dynamic electricity tariff, you can use my-PV DTO to draw affordable energy from the grid – even during cloudy weather or at night – when your PV system isn’t producing enough power. This enables efficient and eco-friendly hot water and heating supply, even in low-sunlight conditions. At the same time, grid demand is reduced by shifting usage to times of low demand and high availability.

Interesante

The my-PV DTO is a feature of the my-PV Cloud and works with all IoT-capable my-PV devices: AC ELWA 2, AC•THOR, AC•THOR 9s, and SOL•THOR.

It currently supports electricity market prices from 22 European countries!

How much does PV heat cost?

With material costs of under €1,000, self-consumption can already be increased significantly – relieving both your heating system and the public grid. my-PV provides the right solutions to optimize and sustainably improve self-consumption.

Key benefits at a glance:

  • Grid relief: By combining battery storage and hot water as thermal storage, pressure on the grid is reduced.

  • Increased self-consumption: A larger share of generated energy is used directly, lowering operating costs significantly.

  • Sustainability: Renewable energy use is optimized, making a concrete contribution to the energy and heating transition.

With my-PV devices, you can maximize self-consumption and minimize grid feed-in charges – making surplus solar power usage sustainable, cost-efficient, and grid-friendly.

Terugleverkosten

Minimizing feed-in costs in the Netherlands

Since August 2024, the Netherlands has introduced a new fee for feeding PV electricity into the grid. However, these costs can be reduced by increasing self-consumption – allowing for free hot water while avoiding additional fees!
