School project brings solar heat to a townhouse

Hot water without an oil boiler? In a 50-year-old townhouse, this became possible thanks to a school project using the SOL•THOR by my-PV. So, what makes this first reference project in autonomous heat generation stand out?

Since early 2025, an off-grid photovoltaic solution has been providing hot water in a townhouse near Nuremberg – completely without grid connection, without complex approvals, and most importantly, without fossil fuels.

What makes it special: The project was realized by a dedicated team of future mechanical engineering technicians from the Rudolf Diesel Technical School. Together with homeowner Stefan L. and the solution from my-PV, they developed a system that demonstrates just how simple and efficient it can be to turn solar power directly into heat.

At the heart of the system is the SOL•THOR from the Austrian experts in photovoltaic heat – an innovative device that uses direct current from PV modules to power a heating element, converting electricity directly into thermal energy – without the need for an inverter. Instead of feeding electricity into the grid or installing solar thermal collectors, DC power is converted directly into usable heat. This allows hot water to be provided entirely off-grid – ideal for anyone looking to reduce heating costs and become more energy independent.

Stefan L. shares insights into exciting experiences, minor challenges, and major benefits:

“Today, we can cover almost all of our hot water demand with solar energy – even in an existing building with limited space. This off-grid solution not only saves heating oil but also gives us the freedom to use the solar power exactly where we need it.”

Curious how the system works, why no inverter is needed, and how a custom-programmed Raspberry Pi plays a key role? Read the full reference description here.
