Austria´s largest solar park in planning

Between Bärnbach and Rosental, where coal was once mined, Energie Steiermark wants to build the largest photovoltaic park in the state. The park will supply 5,000 Styrian households with electricity from solar energy. The planned photovoltaic park is to be around 20 hectares in size after completion. With an installed capacity of 16 megawatts, annual CO2 emissions could then be reduced by more than 13 million kilograms. The area between the Styrian communities of Bärnbach and Rosental has a truly symbolic character due to its past as a coal mining area in terms of the energy turnaround it is aiming for.

By 2030, Energie Steiermark intends to build several solar parks on a total area of 450 hectares. Clean electricity in the amount of 330 gigawatt hours could supply 95,000 households. The company plans to invest one billion euros in the expansion of renewable, CO2-free energy and in the development of intelligent power grids, so-called smart grids.
