New compatibility partner: Tesla

Tesla’s Powerwall family of home energy storage systems is now compatible with my-PV’s solar power solutions.

As well as electric vehicles, Tesla also develops products for the generation, storage and use of energy in buildings. The Powerwall is a compact energy storage system that stores solar power or mains electricity and supplies the household during the day, at night and during power cuts.

Compatibility with my-PV

The Powerwall 2, Powerwall 3 and Powerwall 3P are compatible. They can be easily connected via the network to the AC ELWA 2, my-PV’s PV heating element, and use surplus PV energy for hot water production and to supplement the heating system. This means that, in addition to a Tesla battery storage system, even more solar power can be used directly in a household – namely to charge the thermal battery, i.e. a hot water or buffer tank. As this acts as the primary heating source, it minimises the draw on grid electricity or fossil fuels whilst simultaneously maximising the yield from the home’s own photovoltaic system. In view of uncertain future feed-in tariff models – such as the unclear EEG tariff in Germany – this offers a way to ensure the payback of your own solar system.

The Tesla system itself provides the measurement data required for surplus management; additional measurement hardware, such as the my-PV WiFi Meter, is therefore not required. my-PV devices regulate their output continuously and with watt-level precision according to the currently available surplus, ensuring that only self-generated electricity is used for heating.

Storage and heating complement each other effectively: any surplus that cannot be stored in the battery is channelled into hot water production rather than into the public grid. This increases the system’s self-consumption and reduces the amount of heat drawn from the grid.

Instructions for the correct installation and configuration of my-PV and Tesla can be found here.
